President’s Message – June/July 2013
As incoming president, it is my pleasure to communicate with the members of the Polk County Bar Association about the upcoming year – it promises to be a very active one.
In June, we will have our annual golf outing, which supports the Volunteer Lawyers Project (June 7), the annual law clerk luncheon (June 11) and a CLE (June 21) that is free to you as a member.
In addition, we are getting ready to start a strategic planning process to set the direction for the PCBA for the future. The Board decided that the process is important to make sure that we are meeting the needs of our members. Although this effort will require Board involvement, we welcome any suggestions that our members may have for the PCBA. Please let a Board member or me know if you have any thoughts on what you would like the PCBA to be doing.
In May, the Polk County Board of Supervisors received the Fifth Judicial District Master Plan from the National Center for State Courts and OPN Architects. Receipt of the master plan is providing the Board of Supervisors with the information they need to move forward with a referendum on the courts space issue as early as November, 2013. Assuming there is a referendum, we expect the PCBA to be actively involved in supporting this important effort. We will be communicating with you further about the referendum.
I would like to thank the Board, staff, and our committees for all of their efforts in making this past year very successful for the PCBA. I especially thank Anjie Shutts for her great leadership as president.
